Customer Feedback

We had cover through our energy supplier, was very expensive and they missed faults that cost us. Took out cover through BML Gas and on the one occasion we had to call them the engineer came in just over 12 hours and fixed the problem in less than 1. Since that visit we have not had to use our policy again but are happy to know we can count on BML for great service if needed.

The engineer that recommended BML Gas boiler cover wasn’t wrong. Simple terms and conditions, simple setup and hassle free. Someone called and scheduled boiler inspection 2 days after application, 3 days later we were covered for less than a fiver a week. Very happy and would recommend to friends – infact I did.

Tips & Hints
What is boiler cover?

Boiler cover is a form of insurance that you can buy as protection if something goes wrong with your boiler and/or central heating. It can help pay for the engineer's call out costs, as well as the cost of any parts they may need to make the required repairs.

Who needs boiler cover?

If you own your home, you should have some form of insurance for your heating system - however, you should first check to see if your boiler is not covered by your home insurance, as some policies do. If you rent your property, you don't need central heating cover - your landlord has to arrange this. However, you should discuss boiler protection clauses with your landlord when you move in, in case you need to use it during your tenancy.

What types of boiler cover are there?

There are two main types of cover; boiler breakdown cover and central heating full cover. As you might expect, boiler cover only protects the boiler and its controls, while a central heating fault cover also protects everything connected to it, including radiators and pipes. Many deals on either of these two types of insurance may include boiler service at no extra cost or for a small fee, compare options to find the best deal for you.

What types of boiler can I get cover for?

In general, you can find boiler cover for most boiler types, including gas, combined, condensing and oil boilers. However, to be on the safe side, you should always check with the supplier before signing up – especially if your boiler is more than a few years old.

What if my boiler and central heating sytem is very old?

Older boilers and heating systems can be more difficult to get covered because they often do not meet many insurance company requirements. General Performance Standards as well as Emissions and Energy Efficiency Standards. Insurance premiums for older boilers are often higher, and with some providers, you may not have any insurance at all.

What if my boiler can't be fixed?

Some boilers are found in a state known as ‘beyond economical repair’, and providers may refuse to cover you – in this case, it’s likely you’ll have to find a new boiler and then apply for a boiler cover policy.

What if I move house?

If you move house your provider will likely not be able to cover you under your current contract. However you can always contact them if you want to negotiate a new deal.

How soon can I claim after taking our boiler cover?

Many boiler cover providers have a no-claims period at the beginning of the policy - this is to prevent people from taking out cover after their boiler breaks down and claiming right away. You can expect it to take between a few days and a month, depending on your provider.

Does my boiler cover stop if I change energy supplier?

You won't have to worry about boiler cover if you switch energy providers, boiler cover and energy supply are usually independent of each other,

However if you have taken out boiler cover with your energy supplier we would advise to contact them to check.

How long does a collout take?

Boiler cover providers don’t normally give this information, however many do offer emergency callouts for certain situations – normally if there is a risk to your health or if you’re building is made uninhabitable. Emergency callouts generally reach you within 24 hours.

Don’t wait until your boiler breaks down

Many boiler cover providers have a no-claims period at the beginning of the policy - this is to prevent people from taking out cover after their boiler breaks down and claiming right away. You can expect it to be between a few days and a month, depending on your provider. It’s better to take a policy out as soon as you can, so if something does happen to your boiler you’re more likely to be covered.

Remember servicing and safety inspections

In addition to boiler cover, it is important to have a policy that provides for regular servicing and safety inspections so that you can keep your boiler in good working order, thereby reducing the possibility of future repairs.

Carry out proper maintenance

Claims resulting from poor or no maintenance on your part, such as a buildup of limescale, may not be covered by boiler insurance. Remember it’s up to you to make sure your boiler is maintained properly. A hassle you don't have with BML Boiler Cover

Don’t take out cover you don’t need

It’s worth remembering that boiler cover can come as a standalone policy but some have it as part of a home insurance deal. You should check whether your home insurance includes boiler cover as standard, or even as an extra add-on, as it may work out cheaper than taking out separate cover.

It might be your landlord’s responsibility

If you’re a renter, you may not have to worry about boiler cover as it’s generally the homeowner’s responsibility – in this case, your landlord. You might be able to take out a separate policy but it will usually have to be with your landlord’s permission.

Gas safe engineer and certificate

When you have your boiler serviced or inspected, this should always be done by a gas-safe engineer. Gas-safe engineers are qualified to work on, inspect, and service gas boilers, and they are the only people legally allowed to do so. To ensure your engineer is gas-safe be sure to ask for ID. You can also check the company they work for has a gas-safe logo.

Recognise when you need a servicing/new boiler

It’s always helpful to know when your boiler needs to be looked at, so recognising tell-tale signs like an extinguished pilot light, a flame that isn’t blue, strange smells or sounds, or general performances issues can help you take action sooner rather than later.

Shop around

The best way to find a good deal on boiler cover is by shopping around – this means you can compare deals by the things that are important to you, like cost, level of cover, callout charges, and excess fees. Once you’ve compared your options you’ll be able to find a deal that suits your needs best.
